My Chromebook is broken!
What is a Chromebook?A Chromebook is NOT a full fledged computer. A Chromebook is basically a web browser so you you can surf the Internet and interact on web based platforms such as Google Classroom or Google Meet. Everything you do on a district Chromebook is web based. The sites contain the data. Chromebooks use Google Chrome browser, just like you would with a full computer. When the student signs into a Chromebook, they are actually signing into Google.
If a site starts acting up or generating errors, try another website. If you can visit another website without issue, the problem is not the Chromebook. Some sites will have warnings that pop-up. Are you at the right site?
The ONLY time a Chromebook should need to be exchanged is when there is a hardware failure such as: cannot connect to wifi at all, no sound and volume is turned up and not muted (see below), won't boot up or remain on while working, the mouse pad stops working, the screen is damaged, or if you see a large "!" in the middle of the screen. Make sure the Chromebook is up to date: For instructions, click here
My child keeps getting kicked out of or dropped from Google Meet: This is unlikely a problem with the Chromebook. If you can navigate to other websites without issue the Chromebook is operating properly. This may be an issue with the Meet you were in or there is too much congestion on your home network. A typical student needs a 2mb connection per student. Contact your Internet provider to find out what is best for your needs.
No sound/volume: Check and make sure it is not muted or turned down so much you cannot hear it. Also be sure there is nothing stuck in the headphone jack. If there are no headphones plugged in, but you see an image of headphones on the volume control, a piece of headphone is probably stuck inside. ![]()
Open settings from the 3 dots in the upper right corner of the Chrome browser: ![]() On the left side click "Privacy and security," then select "Site Settings" in the center menu: ![]()
Select "meet.google.com" from the list (it may say blocked in the subtext): ![]()
Change the camera and microphone settings from "Block" to "Allow:" ![]()
Example: A student named Sabastian would be: sebastia.1234567@nv.ccsd.net (note the "n" is missing from his name)

3) Then sign-in again by clicking "Add Person" in the bottom left corner and sign into your account from scratch: ![]()
Most of the screen is very large/too large: Students often select some accessibility options by accident, most typically: Large Mouse Cursor, Text-to-Speech (ChromeVox), Highlighted Mouse Cursor, High Contrast Mode. From the "US" menu on the bottom right of the Chromebook display, click on "Accessibility" and uncheck any options that are checked in the list: ![]()
Keyboard Shortcuts/Most Common: ![]() No WIFI- Try rebooting the Chromebook by holding the power button down for 15 seconds, then boot it back up to see if the WIFI connects. ![]() ![]() You can also try clicking by the clock in the bottom right hand corner, select the little down arrow next to wifi, then turn wifi on/off: If still not connecting, double-click the connection you normally use and select "Forget" which will wipe the connection from the Chromebook: ![]() Contact your teacher if the problem continues.
No Sound- Check volume control on both the Chromebook and the headphones (if being used). If no headphones are being used, does it look like a headphone plug is stuck in the headphone jack? Contact your teacher if the problem continues.
Cannot sign in at all or "Let's Go" button appears on sign-in page with Enterprise Enrollment screen- This means the Chromebook lost its enrollment. Contact your teacher to arrange for a swap of the Chromebook. |
